Is your cat breathing heavy or wheezing, if so lets look at the causes?

Let's look at the following?, Laboured breathing, rapid breathing and noisy breathing, if they are standing or crouching with elbows pulled away from the body, head and neck stretched out, loss of appetite, coughing in some cases, bluish or purplish gums, unusual behaviour like hiding or excessive me owing.

Some of the causes can be fluid in the chest or hydrothorax referring to the accumulation of fluid in the space between the lungs and ribs.

Common causes for hydrothorax include infectious peritonitis, ruptured thoracic duct, and congestive heart failure due to cardiomyopathy, this is a viral disease that the body cannot eliminate, and that causes fluid to accumulate in the chest and abdomen. The lymphatic system collects excess fluid from throughout the body and some of the fat absorbed from the intestines, the fluid is then returned to the main circulation by the thoracic duct connecting to one of the large veins near the heart, if this rupture then the fluid spills into the chest and this causes breathing difficulties.

Cardiomyopathy or enlarged heart often leads to congestive heart failure, this is when inadequate pumping action by the heart, resulting in fluid accumulation in the chest or lungs.

Feline asthma also referred to as allergic bronchitis, which is like asthma in humans, this is when there is an allergic reaction that causes spasms in the airway. These spasms can lead to swelling and difficulty in breathing. In some cats this can be seasonal or others a chronic problem, this could become life threatening.

So what triggers this? Grass and pollen, feline heart worm disease, some cat litters, food, household cleaners and sprays, dust, dust mites, mold, some perfumes and cosmetics. Other causes can be things like trauma, tumours, hiatal hernia, bleeding and infection.

How to deal with this look out for any threats such as treat any mold, change litter and treat for heart worm, check airways for obstruction and treat any infections. Garlic and Fenugreek or Turmeric is good for assisting with breathing problems, if you are concerned seek medical advice.
